How Willow uses AI to read pet records — and the lines it won't cross

Willow uses AI to save you time on the tedious parts of pet health record-keeping — reading documents and summarizing history — while keeping you in control of what actually gets saved. Here's exactly what it does, what data it touches, and how to turn it off.

Where AI shows up

Reading your documents. When you upload a vet record, a photo or a PDF, Willow can read it and pull out the details: vaccines and due dates, visit notes, medications, weight, insurance claims, microchip numbers. Instead of typing it all in, you get a pre-filled draft ready for review.

Summarizing for a visit. When you're heading to the vet, Willow can compile a summary from the records you've saved, creating a vet-visit prep briefing, or a full health history for a new vet or specialist. It organizes what's already in your account; it doesn't add opinions.

You always have the final say

Nothing is saved automatically. When AI reads a document, every entry lands in a review screen first — you confirm what's right, edit what isn't, and skip anything that doesn't belong. Your edits always win: if you change a date or a dosage the AI read, your version is what's saved. And when the AI reads something with lower confidence, for example, a handwritten date or a smudged label, Willow flags that specific field and asks you to double-check it.

Summaries organize, they don't diagnose

Willow's summaries are factual. They lay out your companion's records so you can walk into an appointment prepared. They don't interpret results, offer a diagnosis, or tell you what to do. Willow is a place to keep and share records; your veterinarian gives medical advice. Requests that ask for diagnosis, treatment plans, or emergency guidance are blocked by design.

What data is involved

AI processes only what you give it — the document you upload or the records you ask it to summarize — and only when you trigger it. Willow uses Anthropic's Claude as its AI provider, under a data-processing agreement: your records are processed to power these features, and they are not used to train AI models. Behind-the-scenes AI interaction records are automatically deleted after 90 days; your confirmed pet records stay in your account until you remove them.

You're in control

AI document scanning can be switched off for your whole household in Settings — it's on by default, and you can opt out whenever. Every record can always be added by hand. AI features are part of Premium, with a monthly limit on summaries per household.

What AI is good at — and where it isn't

AI is fast and accurate on clean, printed documents and a big shortcut for data entry. It can, however, misread messy scans, faint handwriting, or unusual formats — which is exactly why Willow displays a confidence level badge after extrction and prompts you to review before any input is saved.

Willow keeps pet records, reminders, documents, and care details in one calmer place — with AI that helps, and knows its place. Early access is open — join now.
